Evening News photo by Dennis Oblander Southern Michigan Timberwolves defensive lineman Mike LaPlante makes a tackle against against the London, Ontario Silverbacks during their game Erie Mason High School Saturday evening.
A T-Wolves team that had outscored its first two opponents 68-2 faced its first tough opponent and came up short.
The London Silverbacks took advantage of three Southern Michigan turnovers and held off Monroe's semipro football team 19-13.
A near-capacity crowd at Erie Mason went home disappointed when a T-Wolves' comeback fell short.
London led 19-6 until late in the third quarter when Southern Michigan put together an impressive 65-yard scoring drive.
Rob Elswick's 27-yard pass reception from Kent Smith set up Ronneil Davis' five-yard touchdown run that brought the T-Wolves back to within six points.
Southern Michigan had the momentum after Jeremy Anderson intercepted a pass late in the third quarter, but the offense managed to run only six plays and compiled just four yards in the final 15 minutes. The defense, which had played pretty well, failed to stop the Silverbacks on a pair of late third-down plays and London managed to run out the last 5:02 of the game.
"It's hard to win when you're minus-two on turnovers," said Southern Michigan head coach Dick Clark. "That was the difference in this game.
"The guys had a couple of games where they played well, but they didn't play as well tonight and they got their hats handed to them."
London scored on its first possession, driving 76 yards for a 6-0 lead. Those were the first points given up by the Timberwolves defense this season. Robert Gaines blocked the extra-point kick.
Southern Michigan responded immediately, tying the game on a 60-yard drive, all of it on the ground. Nate Lewis carried in from the one to tie the game. The T-Wolves tried a trick play on the extra point, but their pass fell incomplete.
After that one impressive drive, Southern Michigan had a hard time running on the Silverbacks and the T-Wolves receivers also had a hard time getting open.
Jason Robbins sacked Silverbacks quarterback Chad Brooks late in the first quarter. The ball popped loose and John Morano recovered for the T-Wolves. But it was three-and-out and Troy Rizzuto was forced to punt for the first time in three games.
Southern Michigan was driving late in the first half when Smith's pass went off his receiver's hands and popped up. Dave Martin could have called for a fair catch on his interception. He then raced 65 yards for a score, putting London up 12-6.
The Timberwolves had a chance to score late in the first half, but Smith unwisely scrambled in the final seconds and the clock ran out before then could attempt a field goal.
Southern Michigan finished 2-1 in the nonleague portion of its schedule. The T-Wolves open Mid-Contenental Football League play Saturday with a game at the Ohio Swarm.
